Petersburg came into view. It was a fair-sized town with extensive docks, mainly occupied by fishing boats. Fatty said it was called “Little Norway”, despite the Russian name. Almost everybody was of Norwegian descent.

Fatty landed the plane just outside the harbor and taxied into an empty spot on the dock. I paid him, jumped out, and he took off again for home. I hiked up the dock looking for a hotel and stopped at the first one I came to, Oslo House. It was more of a rooming house than a hotel, with small bedrooms and bathrooms down the hall. The price was low, and it was spotless. The charming young blonde behind the counter was named Inge.

I left my bag in the room, used the bathroom, and took a shower. Then I got dressed and went out to find a place to eat dinner. The main street was Nordic Drive, and most businesses were along there, in wooden buildings of antique style. There wasn’t much choice. A pizza place, a bar which might or might not have served food, and a somewhat surprising Mexican restaurant. No seafood joint was in evidence. I opted for Mexican.

The guy behind the counter had tan skin and black hair and looked like he could be Mexican. But he greeted the customer in front of me in Norwegian. Everybody else in the place had blonde hair and blue eyes. I didn’t look too out of place, although my hair was light brown, and my eyes were hazel.

The menu was unfamiliar to me, as I never had Mexican food before. I had a chicken enchilada, which was tasty enough, washed down with a couple of Coronas.

Back at the hotel, I picked up a local paper: the Petersburg Press. It was a year of turmoil in the US with student protests against the Vietnam war, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and many other chaotic events. But reading the local paper gave few hints of all that. Instead, it was about fishing, logging, hunting, and the oil riches which were soon to come to Alaska.

Lady L could be expected to arrive by noon the next day, and I was anxious to get back aboard. I fell asleep thinking about Cindy.
